Since rules and restrictions vary depending on the type of cells or batteries to be transported, we offer two different courses.

Transportation of Exempted Lithium and sodium ion cells/batteries (all modes of transport) and
Transportation of Fully Regulated Lithium and sodium ion cells/batteries (all modes of transport).

Which training is right for you depends entirely on what types of batteries you handle

Transportation of Exempted Lithium and sodium ion cells/batteries (all modes of transport)

For those who only handle cells or batteries within the limitations stated below and

which in the various regulations are referred to as Section II (aviation) and Special Provision 188 (road & sea).

NOTE: This training does not apply to "loose" batteries when transported by air. Loose batteries refer to batteries

that are not installed in equipment or packaged with equipment.

If you handle such batteries, you are instead covered by the training:

Transportation of Fully Regulated Lithium and sodium ion cells/batteries.

Transportation of Fully Regulated Lithium and sodium ion cells/batteries (all modes of transport)

For those who handle cells or batteries within the limitations specified below and

which in the various regulations are referred to as Section IA & IB (air), Fully regulated (road & sea),

and exempt Lithium and sodium ion cells and batteries.

The training also includes handling of:

  • Damaged or defective batteries
  • Prototypes
  • Batteries intended for recycling

Lithium and sodium ion cells/batteries loose (non-aviation), packed with equipment and in equipment:

Lithium and sodium ion cells/batteries loose, packed with equipment and in equipment:

Lithium metal cells ≤ 1 g lithium

Lithium metal cells > 1 g lithium

Lithium metal batteries (Lithium metal batteries) ≤ 2 g lithium

Lithium metal batteries (Lithium metal batteries) > 2 g lithium

Lithium ion cells (Lithium ion cells) ≤ 20 Wh

Lithium ion cells (Lithium ion cells) > 20 Wh

Lithium ion batteries ≤ 100 Wh

Lithium ion batteries > 100Wh

Sodium ion cells (Sodium ion cells) ≤ 20 Wh

Sodium ion cells (Sodium ion cells) > 20 Wh

Sodium ion batteries (Sodium ion batteries) ≤ 100 Wh

Sodium ion batteries (Sodium ion batteries) > 100Wh

Course length

Two days (16 hours) - teacher-led online education via Zoom or Teams

Start time: 08:30

End time: 17:00

Previous knowledge

No prior knowledge is required.

Degree

The training ends with a test that ensures that the training objectives have been met. For those who send batteries by air, the requirements according to also apply. CBTA (Competency-Based Training and Assessment)To facilitate your quality work in accordance with CBTA and ensure that the requirements are met, your training will be registered with IATA. Upon successful completion, the participant receives a training certificate valid for road and sea transport and an IATA training certificate valid for air transport.

Other

The training is a teacher-led online training conducted via Zoom or Teams. Each participant needs access to their own computer with a camera and microphone, as well as email. An invitation with a link will be sent to the student prior to the training.

ABOUT CBTA

Background
Through the ICAO-TI regulations, the International Civil Aviation Organization introduced new requirements on January 1, 2023, requiring businesses involved in the transport of dangerous goods by air to train, assess and ensure the competence of their personnel through a so-called CBTA program. The same was introduced within the International Air Transportation Association (IATA).

Certification in the area began in 2022 and DGM Sverige AB became among the first companies in the world to be awarded IATA CBTA Center Provider certification for competency-based training and assessment (CBTA). DGM Sverige AB has been conducting IATA CBTA approved training since September 2022.

How does it affect you?

It is the employer's responsibility to ensure that personnel are competent to perform all functions for which they are responsible before they perform them. Performance requirements should be analyzed and based on legal and business-related requirements and should be made by a competent person, such as a security advisor. In other words, the companies involved should have their own CBTA program.
DGM has chosen to become an IATA CBTA provider for training, which means that DGM provides training for well-defined functions (such as shippers, packers, loaders, etc.). These trainings are carried out and assessed by DGM according to the programs approved by IATA. Ultimately, trained and assessed personnel receive an IATA certificate, which is often a requirement from airlines.

In the case of consignors handling dangerous goods, the function is to hand over to the airlines goods that meet the requirements of ICAO-TI/IATA-DGR. The consignor handling DG shipments is included under “function 7.1” according to “IATA Training Guidance”.
For shippers who only handle lithium and sodium ion batteries, "function 7.1" can be adapted according to an approved program, which in many cases affects the time for training implementation (the time is reduced from the basic requirements).
